Volunteers from BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, the Hindu temple on Lees Road in Ashton-under-Lyne, came onto the streets to clean up the local neighbourhood as a part of the country’s largest annual Spring-cleaning campaign by Keep Britain Tidy.
The temple volunteers filled over 20 bags containing various litter items, significantly improving the surrounding environment.
The initiative was part of the Great British Spring Clean, the nation’s most extensive mass-action environmental campaign during which thousands of bags of litter are filled around the country.
The annual event is organized by Keep Britain Tidy, a leading independent environmental charity that inspires, educates, and enables everyone in the country to value the environment on their doorstep. Keep Britain Tidy is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.
The volunteers from the BAPS Hindu Temple were joined by local councillors Dan Costello and Mohammed Shamsul Karim, who were impressed by the volunteers’ drive to help the local neighbourhood. Cllr Costello said, “It was my pleasure to support the litter pick organised by the Mandir. Keeping the local area tidy has always been a passion of mine, and I am delighted to see community groups being proactive on this issue. Well done to the team at the Mandir for organising such a good event, and thank you to the many volunteers who turned up to do their bit to keep Ashton Hurst tidy.”
Mayur Patel, a lead community outreach volunteer at the temple, added, “His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, the global spiritual leader of the BAPS Hindu fellowship and the inspirer of the Mandir, teaches us to respect and care for the environment and to serve our local communities as a part of our social responsibility. Seeing so many volunteers come together for such a worthy cause is a testimony of the community spirit between the temple and its neighbours and demonstrates collective action's transformative power and impact.

Councillor Mohammed Karim, ward councillor, remarked, “A big thank you to all the volunteers at BAPS Swaminarayan Temple for organising the litter pick. It was a pleasure to be with you and support you. It's great to see so many young children take part. Well done all.”
The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir (Hindu Temple) on Lees Road in Ashton-under-Lyne provides various educational, community and spiritual activities for children, youths, families and older people. It is also a focal place of worship for hundreds of Hindus in the Greater Manchester area.
