A group of eight youngsters from Hayfield and New Mills have smashed their fundraising target in aid of the DEC Earthquake Appeal.

The seven to 10 year olds wanted to raise £350 but have already raised almost £1,700 after they took on a Mini Triathlon challenge.

On Sunday, they swam personal challenges in New Mills Pool, before they leapt on their bikes to cycle the 5km to Hayfield and then hiked 4km up Lantern Pike, finishing with just enough energy for a quick swing and a slide at Little Hayfield Park.

Molly, aged 9, who had the idea of doing a fundraiser, said: “We heard about the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria in school, and I really wanted to do something to help.”

Her family got together with others to plan the event, and primary school children Bessie, Elodie, Frances, Eleanor, James and two Eddies enthusiastically agreed to join the challenge.

They set up a Justgiving page for the DEC Action Aid Appeal, and thanks to the generosity of supporters in Hayfield, New Mills and Glossop their fundraising total continues to rise.
