Two supermarkets remove disposable BBQs from sale

Aldi and Waitrose supermarkets have committed to ending the sale of disposable barbecues in a bid to help protect the environment.

In the High Peak, there are Aldi stores in Glossop, Buxton, and Chapel-en-le-Frith, while Waitrose has a store in Buxton.

Lucy Comer, Buyer at Waitrose, said: "Disposable barbecues present a risk to our natural habitats and this is why we've committed to removing them from our shelves this year.

“This is the right thing to do to preserve our local ecosystems and another example of the work we're doing to protect the planet.

“We applaud Aldi for standing with us to make this happen and we hope other retailers will follow.”

High Peak MP Robert Largan, welcoming the move, said: “Disposable BBQs have proved to be a severe fire hazard, especially in the Peak District National Park.

“Having introduced my cross-party Disposable Barbecues Bill to Parliament, I welcome this further progress to reduce the risk of wildfire and encourage all local and national retailers to follow their lead.”

The issue around disposable barbecues had already prompted action from landowners to ban their use on land they own following a spate of fires.

Among those who acted were High Peak Borough Council and the Peak District National Park Authority.
