The Bureau in Glossop is appealing for befrienders

A Glossop-based charity is currently supporting approximately 50 members of the community with befriending.

Throughout the pandemic, The Bureau provided this service over the telephone but they are now getting back to face-to-face meetings where possible. Activities range from a chat in the garden to a local walk, a pint in the pub or perhaps something more energetic like a session in the gym.

But they are in urgent need of new befriending volunteers so that they can help more local individuals who are currently on their waiting list.

Befriending provides companionship for isolated people, the chance to develop new relationships, and opportunities to participate in social activities.

As little as one hour a week for a chat, a brew or a walk can be all it takes to reduce the isolation felt by many in our society.

Jennifer Godwin, Befriending Co-ordinator at The Bureau, said: "Our volunteers undergo induction training to ensure they are fully equipped for the role and are offered ongoing training to support them if that is something they would like to do. We try to match people up with the same interests and hobbies.”

She goes on to say: “It’s sad how many people locally feel isolated. A cup of tea and a good chat help many of our clients have a focal point to their week, which they look forward to.

“Carol has received support from The Bureau for a few years through our Community Navigation Team, she lives alone in sheltered accommodation and until Covid hit was an active and happy lady.

"After the isolation of the pandemic Carol became quite withdrawn and anxious about leaving her flat and coupled with some health issues she suffered with her whole outlook changed.

"The staff at the sheltered accommodation where Carol lives approached The Bureau and asked if we could find a suitable befriender to visit and perhaps encourage Carol to begin socialising again.

"Volunteer Amy was matched with Carol and began visiting on a Friday afternoon for an hour. They quickly realised that both had a shared passion for creative writing and so began writing together each week whilst chatting and catching up. Carol slowly started to venture out again to the hairdressers and the shops and with Amy’s help she plans to attend some of the social groups The Bureau offers.”
