PCrefurb volunteers attend King Charles III's first garden party

Ed Kelly (second from left) and Owen Dack (second from right) were invited to attend the party.

Two representatives of Glossop-based charity PCrefurb recently travelled to Buckingham Palace as guests of King Charles III at the first royal garden party held since the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The invitation came as a result of the charity receiving the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS) in 2022.

This award aims to recognise outstanding work by local volunteer groups to benefit their communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee.

Equivalent to an MBE, the King’s Award for Voluntary Service (as it is now) is the highest award given to local voluntary groups in the UK and is awarded for life.

Former Chairman of PCrefurb, Ed Kelly, and volunteer Owen Dack were chosen to represent the charity for this very special occasion as the two originators of PCrefurb back in 2018.

PCrefurb aims to “bridge the digital divide” by refurbishing donated IT equipment, redistributing it to those most in need, and supporting recipients with basic IT skills.

At its heart is a group of volunteers, many of whom face complex challenges in their lives, who work as a team refurbishing the donated IT equipment. In collaboration with key community partners, PCrefurb has a group of volunteer ‘Digital Champions’ who help people develop their digital skills and confidence.

Mr Kelly described the event as “intriguing and surreal” as he and Owen enjoyed the splendour of the palace gardens and a delicious afternoon tea. Surrounded by representatives of the church, the miliary and community organisations from across the country it was, he said, “a special and memorable day”.

Also in attendance were the then Queen Consort, Camilla, The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and The Duke of Kent.
