Nostalgia: Wheely great car club dinner dance

Glossop and District car club had its annual dinner dance in December 1970 at Dukinfield's Masonic Hall.

Glossop’s Mayor at the time was Cllr J Goddard who congratulated the club on getting recognition by the RAC for the Brentwood Trials.

The trials were well-known in the country’s motor sport circles and were held at Hadfield’s Bankswood Park.

Club president, Mr George Furniss, said Glossop had been well-known in the past for its football and cricket teams – and the music club had brought art and music celebrities to the town.

But the Brentwood Trials were attracting drivers from all over the country every July.

Some 41 cars competed in the trials, but only three were local. They were Alan Lockhead of Marple, George Harrison of Hyde and Arthur Cambridge of Glossop.

The other 38 competitors came from different parts of England, including the Midlands, Hampshire and various clubs in Lancashire and Yorkshire, as well as north and south Wales.

Prizes were handed out by the Mayoress Mrs Goddard to the winners.
