New grants available to uncover High Peak's hidden histories

Historic England has launched a new series of grants - Everyday Heritage Grants - to fund community projects exploring working class histories.

Community and heritage organisations have been invited to apply for grants of up to £25,000 to fund projects that will celebrate the built or historic environment near them.

Each project should enable people to share overlooked or untold stories of the places where they live.

Historic England is also looking for projects that provide innovative volunteering opportunities for young people, or people facing loneliness, as well as contribute positively to participants’ wellbeing.

Applications for grants have opened, and the closing date for the submission of proposals is 23 May.

Local MP Robert Largan has encouraged community groups in the High Peak to apply for Historic England’s new Everyday Heritage Grants to celebrate local history.

He said: "Our history does so much to define who we are as a place and a community.

“High Peak’s roots help to connect us to the generations that preceded us throughout the centuries.

“In High Peak we have a proud history, from the Romans at Melandra Castle in Gamesley, to the Georgians who built modern Buxton, and the daring Dambusters who trained at Derwent Reservoir. These stories need preserving.”

Duncan Wilson, Chief Executive of Historic England, commented: “The histories of castles and great houses and their inhabitants are well documented, but we know far less about our everyday heritage.

“From council estates, pubs and clubs, to farms, factories and shipyards, these are the places where most people have lived, worked and played for hundreds of years.

“We want to explore these untold stories and celebrate the people and places at the heart of our history.”

Nigel Huddleston, Heritage Minister, commented: “Our heritage belongs to us all and should be accessible to everyone.

“I welcome plans for new community-led projects to tell the story of working people across the country, bringing our collective and shared history back to life."
