Local heroes of the hills receive search and Rescue helicopter training

Members from three High Peak-based Mountain Rescue Teams travelled to Humberside recently for training at the Search and Rescue base.

Rescues sometimes need the support of search and rescue helicopters, due to the severity of injury or the remote and difficult nature of terrain in the Peak District.

The training saw volunteers from Glossop, Kinder and Edale teams learn more about the S-92 coast guard helicopter and crew.

As well as touring the aircraft and specialist facilities at the SAR base, the MRT members spent time working around and underneath the hovering helicopter to experience the effects of downwash from the 26-tonne aircraft.

They had hands-on experience of handling a high line to control equipment being winched from the helicopter and methods of safe approach and boarding of the helicopter.

The teams said they were very grateful for the warm welcome and excellent training provided by Humberside SAR-Base.
