How to spend a weekend in the Peak District

Whether you're an avid hiker, a history enthusiast, or someone looking to relax with stunning landscapes, the Peak District has something for everyone. Here are some ideas on how to spend a weekend within the local area.

Start your weekend with a hike to Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District. This iconic trek offers breathtaking views and a challenging yet rewarding hike. The trail from Edale is popular, featuring scenery, including the famous Kinder Downfall, a waterfall that can sometimes be seen blowing upwards in strong winds.

Afterwards, head back to Edale for lunch at one of the local pubs, such as The Old Nags Head or The Rambler Inn. 

In the afternoon, drive to the nearby village of Castleton to explore the Blue John Cavern. The limestone cave is famous for its Blue John stone. You can go on a guided tour of the cavern and learn about the history of it. There are also plenty of jewellery shops nearby selling handmade goods made with Blue John stone.

End your day with dinner in Castleton. The village is home to several traditional pubs and restaurants, such as the Ye Olde Nags Head or The Castle.

Begin your second day with a visit to Chatsworth House, one of England's most iconic stately homes. Located about a 30-minute drive from Castleton, this estate offers landscaped gardens, a huge art collection as well as beautiful interiors. Spend the morning exploring the house and its grounds, and don’t forget to visit the farm shop for some local produce and souvenirs.

After your visit to Chatsworth, drive to the nearby market town of Bakewell, famous for its Bakewell tarts. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the town’s cafes or tea rooms, then take some time to look around the shops and riverside walks.

In the afternoon, explore the Monsal Trail, a scenic walking and cycling path that follows a former railway line. The trail offers views of the Peak District countryside and passes through several impressive tunnels and viaducts.
