High Peak MP visits Toddbrook Reservoir as work progresses

High Peak MP Robert Largan has visited Toddbrook Reservoir to check progress being made on the restoration of the dam.

The major construction work and extensive changes, estimated to cost up to £16 million, is expected to be completed in 2024.

As well as meeting with workers he was also able to pass on residents’ concerns around the two-year project to restore the dam.

The MP said: “I am really pleased that work on the permanent restoration of the reservoir is finally under way.

“As recent events have shown, it is really important that we invest in our water infrastructure, which is essential for reducing the risk of flooding, enhancing biodiversity and feeding the much loved Peak Forest Canal."

He added: “My focus is on working with local residents and the Canal & River Trust to ensure the restoration is completed as quickly as possible, and to minimise disruption for local residents.

“I’m also determined to ensure that we use this opportunity not just to repair the reservoir but to improve it for the next generation.”

It was back in August 2019 that a major incident was declared, and homes evacuated amid fears the dam could collapse.

While work was underway to drain the reservoir the RAF dropped 600 one-tonne bags of aggregate onto the damaged section of the spillway.

The restoration scheme features major construction work including the creation of a new concrete channel across the body of the dam.
