High Peak Green New Deal's call for urgent action

Members of High Peak Green New Deal are urging support for the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill, in response to this week's report about the state of the climate.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has stressed the need to take urgent and drastic action if there is to be any chance of halting runaway Global Warming, which will bring more fires, droughts, floods and displacement of people.

The High Peak group believe that the United Kingdom has a particular responsibility as 'our historical CO2 emissions are enormous'.

They add that although the government is currently talking about ambitious targets, 'many of its actions actually increase our emissions'.

Peter Allen, a spokesperson for the group, commented: "If Parliament could pass this bill it would make such a difference. At the moment, it has support from all parties except the Conservatives. It was drafted by scientists, legal experts and environmentalists and is designed specifically to reverse the climate and ecological breakdown we're facing."

High Peak Borough Council has already passed a motion in support of the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill, while High Peak Green New Deal say it is planning a public meeting to 'gather broad support for the Bill' in September.
