Glossopdale Foodbank supports Martin Lewis campaign

Glossopdale Foodbank is giving its backing to 'Money Saving Expert' Martin Lewis in his campaign to stop an increase in energy bills from April.

The Foodbank wrote to Martin Lewis to ask him to add Glossopdale Foodbank's name to the list of his supporters in his initiative.

Mr Lewis has written to the Chancellor asking him to postpone raising the Energy Price Guarantee in April as it would happen at the same time as the current £400 energy support scheme is due to end, causing financial pain for a great many households.

Glossopdale Foodbank says the hundreds of people the Foodbank helps every week are already suffering from the decision to ‘heat or eat’.

Danny McLoughlin, a member of Glossopdale Foodbank Management Committee, said: “The overall objective of the Foodbank is to combat poverty, most specifically through the provision of food parcels.

“But the energy crisis is meaning that more money spent on energy means less to spend on food.

“People who have to turn to the Foodbank already don’t have money to put food on the table throughout the week.

“Plus, the Government will need to subsidise households only from April to July, after which it will be spending far less than it thought it would have to spend when the Chancellor made his plans.

“The Chancellor can prevent so much pain and distress to adults and children by delaying a rise in the Energy Price Guarantee.”

He said if the proposed increase in the Energy Price Guarantee goes ahead, national charity Energy Action predicts that the number of fuel-poor households will rise to 8.4 million – double the number in October 2021.
