Glossop kayaker to take on unique challenge

Tony Riley.

An intrepid kayaker from Glossop is taking on a unique challenge this summer - travelling from his garden all the way to sea.

After missing out on a trip last year, Tony Riley came up with the idea to see if he could make it all the way from the small stream that runs through his garden to the sea.

“I thought it was a silly idea but after following the stream on Google Maps, I noticed it joined bigger rivers and streams and makes its way to the sea at Liverpool.”

Tony, who lives on the Shirebrook estate, is now putting plans in place for his 80-mile journey that is due to begin on Tuesday 14 June and is expected to take five days to complete.

The journey is not without its challenges as Tony explained: “The stream in my garden joins the Manor Park River which carries on to Stockport and eventually the Manchester shipping canal to the sea.

“It has lots of hazards as you can imagine, fallen trees, white-water, over 30 weirs, as well as underground sections. So, lots to work around.

“I plan to kayak the whole way, where obstacles are in the way like weirs or fallen trees, I plan to get out and walk around them.”

In order to take on the challenge Tony is looking for help from people during his trip.

He will need volunteer support to meet him at certain points along the route.

“It will be drop off my sleeping set up and a dry set of clothes, having tea on the go and recharged batteries for my go pro.”

It is hoped that the footage Tony films will be edited into a short film.
