Glossop-based charity launches its first Star Jump Challenge in support of women diagnosed with cancer in and around pregnancy

Mummy’s Star is ending 2023 with this incredible challenge to raise vital funds and awareness about cancer and pregnancy.

People are doing star jumps to match the date - one minute on 1st December, two minutes on 2nd December, up to 24 minutes on Christmas Eve.

Women and children supported by the charity have signed up to take on the challenge to share their stories about their diagnosis and as a thank you to the charity for their support. Staff and trustees are also joining together (some virtually) and star jumping every day.

Cancer at this precious time in life brings extra distress for women and their families. Instead of excitement and joy, mums are often anxious with feelings of isolation, grieving the motherhood they had hoped for and having to make lots of difficult choices.

Mummy’s Star was founded by a local man, Pete Wallroth, in memory of his late wife, and for 10 incredible years the charity has provided emotional, practical and financial support to around 1,800 families who have faced this horrendous experience.

The Star Jump Challenge was launched to bring families together, to help raise awareness and to raise vital funds for the charity.

It costs around £360 to support a mum for 12 months, and they are hoping to raise £3,600 through the challenge to fund support for 10 mums in 2024. You can donate to the challenge or join in yourself.

Founder of Mummy’s Star, Pete Wallroth, said: “This is a such as fantastic way of celebrating the work of Mummy’s Star, celebrating our families and remembering those mums who have sadly died. Christmas is an especially difficult time for our families to navigate.

"For some, it brings sadness that they have been robbed of the magical first Christmas with their new baby. Others are in the middle of treatment so Christmas may have to be postponed, while for some they are grateful just to be there for another Christmas, or it’s a day when they wish their loved one was still with them watching their children get excited over the festivities.

"We chose to do the Star Jump Challenge to get as many people involved as possible and to reassure families that they are not alone. Even though in December it can feel like everyone is busy, Mummy’s Star is always here for them.”
