Famous comedian spotted running through Glossop

Eddie stopped on Woolley Lane to give an update on her marathon.

It's not every day you see a famous face in these parts but local residents got a glimpse of an award-winning stand-up comedian and actor on Saturday (24 September).

Eddie Izzard was the talk of social media after she was seen running through Glossopdale as part of her latest challenge for charity.

A lifelong Crystal Palace fan, the writer and activist was embarking on a ‘Marathon March’ from Manchester to Sheffield in aid of the football club's official charity Palace for Life Foundation - of which she’s a patron.

The 60-year-old, who is a keen marathon runner, gave a short video update on Twitter from Woolley Lane in Hollingworth, which confirmed the suspicions of local residents after speculation was rife on Facebook.

People posted to say she had been spotted running through Glossop, then on Sheffield Road, on Snake Road and near Ladybower.

In the video, she said: “I’m going over the Snake Pass which is incredibly high,” she said. “A bit crazy but sorry I’m working up here. I’m going to avoid traffic coming along the A57. It goes as high as over 500m, or 1600ft, so higher than everyone is going to be doing marching around in the South London area.

“Well done to everyone, onwards and upwards - or onwards and flatwards.”

In another update from the Snake Pass, she revealed she had received a message of support from Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira - which she attempted to respond to in his native French!

The challenge involved 140 Crystal Palace fans walking the 26.2 miles around South London to raise valuable money for vulnerable young people in the community.

In a career spanning three decades, Eddie Izzard has appeared on stage and on screen in a host of films, TV programmes and documentaries.

A long-term supporter of the Labour Party, she announced last month that she hopes to stand as a candidate in Sheffield - where she studied at university - at the next general election.
