Update on planned road closures for Mottram Moor gas works

Tameside Council has issued a timetable for the planned road closures during the essential gas works on and around the A57 Mottram Moor.

The huge roadworks project started on Monday (4 April) and is expected to last 20 weeks.

Cadent gas engineers are installing around 1,400 metres of new gas pipe under the road, which is part of the main route between Manchester and Sheffield.

The new main will improve the feed to around 2,500 homes in the Glossop and Hadfield areas, with growth having put a strain on existing gas infrastructure.

Motorists and commuters are already used to experiencing delays on the busy road and journey times have already been extended as a result of the tailbacks caused by the roadworks this week.

The council has issued an update on traffic management which will be in place in the coming weeks:

Back Moor and Stalybridge Road will be closed in alternative directions from 10 April until 3 July. This will allow the gas works to be undertaken on Back Moor, with a connection on Stalybridge Road. The traffic will use the area as a gyratory.

Transport for Greater Manchester will be amending the traffic signals to allow for the extra traffic on Stalybridge Road. The council say the traffic will be monitored 24 hours a day/seven days a week for the duration of the works.

On Mottram Moor, the Manchester bound lane will be closed until 22 August.

From 11 to 25 April, the road crossing near Back Moor will have two lanes closed and two lanes opened (one in either direction with no temporary lights).

From 11 April to 4 July, traffic will be allowed Stalybridge bound only on Back Moor while traffic on Stalybridge Road will be allowed Mottram bound only.

From 20 June to 25 July, traffic on Woolley Lane will be under signal control.

The council say these dates are approximate and may be subject to change, but updates will be communicated accordingly.

Stagecoach, which runs the 237 bus service between Glossop and Ashton through Mottram, says passengers can expect delays along the route while the work takes place. The bus company advises to allow extra time for journeys and apologises for inconvenience caused.

Cadent, which manages the local gas network, say there will be no interruption to gas supply and teams will be working seven days a week to hasten completion.
