Teenager charged after stabbing in Ashton

A police presence on a section of Market Street on Thursday.

A teenager has been charged in connection with a stabbing in Ashton-under-Lyne on Wednesday (18 August).

At around 10.30pm, police were called to a report of a male with injuries on Market Street.

A 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital for treatment, where he remains in a serious but stable condition. 

Greater Manchester Police has confirmed that a 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with section 18 wounding and possession of an offensive weapon.

He was due to appear at Tameside Magistrates' Court on Friday morning (20 August). 

Detective Sergeant Christopher Dean, from Tameside CID, said: "We're aware of a number of reports of disorder in the town centre in Ashton-under-Lyne and would like to reassure the community that we are working alongside partners to combat the issue.

"Extra resources have been deployed in recent weeks and we will bring those responsible to justice.
