Rev David Warner column: Message of Christmas

In his latest column for us, the Vicar of Mossley, Reverend David Warner, says the celebration of Christmas "remains real and relevant" even in these different times.

We’re getting towards the end of the school term. Usually for me that means a mad dash around carol services and Christingles, and though we’ve managed to keep everything going this year, the move to virtual celebrations, though necessary, has sadly taken much of the excitement and immediacy out of these lovely events.

We’ve been privileged to host virtual memorial services and other events, and thankfully we can hold our Christmas services in something like the usual way, and they will be streamed online for those unable to join us.

At the end of term, and as we get ready in earnest for the celebrations to come, let’s pay tribute to those who have been keeping things going, especially for our children - for our school staff and all who work to support the young in our communities.

Let’s also raise a cheer for those who are working and will continue to work throughout this season to keep us supplied, safe, moving and our loved ones cared for.

This has been an Advent unlike any other, and will be a totally different Christmas for us all, but the celebration remains real and relevant, as we recall the birth of a child who changed the world forever.

As we remember him, and his story of love and service to all, we can look forward with hope to the year ahead, whatever challenges it brings: we are greater when we work together.
