Nostalgia: Reporter raises funds for Mandy's Scanner Appeal

Back in 1990, Reporter staff sold coffee and cakes for the Mandy Turner Scanner Appeal during a live outside broadcast by Tameside Hospital's Eight Towns Radio.

We raised just over £300 in the space of three hours.

The reception area of our Old Street office in Ashton saw dozens of shoppers calling in for a welcome cuppa served by receptionists Elsie Tipton, Carol Woodcock and Julie Cummings along with Amanda Worrall from the accounts department.

Helping to drum up support during the morning was Droylsden’s stalwart fundraiser Alan Jones who was out and about collecting cash by the bucketful. 

Other guests on the show included appeal chairman John Ilett and co-ordinator Bridget Brooks who gave an update on the many events planned as the campaign moved ever closer to Mandy’s £1 million target.

With reporter Mary Maden helping to count the takings, we were proud to announce at the end of the show that the total had topped £318.

Meanwhile, another team of Eight Towns volunteers staged a roadshow and collection at the nearby Asda store which brought in a further £128.
