Nostalgia: Portland Basin to Millennium Dome

A dedicated fundraiser who set her sights on visiting the Millennium Dome finally reached her destination - more than three months after leaving Portland Basin - in the year 2000.

Sue Day travelled more than 200 miles to London aboard ‘Maria’ Britain’s oldest full length narrow boat with her faithful dog Jet and trusty carthorse Bonnie (pictured).

Sue, 46, from Mossley, embarked on her incredible horse-drawn journey in memory of her husband David who had died from cancer two years earlier.

By the time she arrived at the dome in Greenwich, she had raised more than £5,000 for Christie Against Cancer, Willow Wood Hospice and St Ann’s Hospice.

Sue told our reporter that David had restored the boat with friends. “Without him (Maria) would have been unable to make even a short journey.”

Before embarking on the long journey home, Sue was taking time out to visit the Inland Waterways national festival at Waltham Abbey in Essex.
