New low-cost food hub to open in Denton South

The Bread and Butter Thing is an acclaimed food surplus redistribution charity.

A brand new project giving Denton South residents access to weekly groceries at a fraction of high street prices is set to open soon.

'The Bread and Butter Thing' - a scheme which provides up to £35 worth of food for just £7.50 - will open its Denton South Food Hub on 16 August at the Haughton Green Centre on Tatton Road, opposite the library.

Local residents will have the opportunity to buy fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled food and cupboard stables at a fraction of the high street price.

The Denton South ward area covers Haughton Green, Haughton Dale, south Denton and Yew Tree.

Councillor Jack Naylor, who is co-ordinating the Hub, said: “Claire, George and I are delighted to be opening the new food hub in partnership with The Bread & Butter Thing.

"This is a great way for residents to stretch out weekly budgets and access a whole host of healthy family food for a fraction of the cost. There is no joining criteria or commitment needed – and the first order is even free!

Cllr Naylor added: “The weekly food bags are made up of surplus food from supermarkets, food manufacturers and farmers. We never know what we’re going to get from day to day, which means each week your bag of food will be different – but it is always quality, fresh produce.”

For joining details, contact Cllr Jack Naylor on 07772 382548 or email naylorjack@hotmail.co.uk

The scheme is also on the look out for volunteers. If you can help, even for an hour a week, you can contact Cllr Naylor via the above details.

Tameside Council is working with acclaimed food surplus redistribution charity The Bread and Butter Thing to expand its affordable food service in the borough.

A new hub opened at St Peter’s Church in Ashton earlier this month and another one is set to open at Ridgehill Big Local in Stalybridge in due course.
