Going back through time in Mossley

Two new books on the history of Mossley's St George's Church will soon be on sale.

The History and Guide of St George's Church and the Guided Tour of St George's Churchyard are being sold as a fundraiser for the town’s parish church.

The two new books are both illustrated and are printed in full colour.

The History and Guide of St George’s Church is a journey through time, and reveals the background of the building of both the original and the present church.

The 124-page book tells the life stories of each of the vicars who have served at St George’s; the stained glass windows; members of the choir; the Mothers’ Union, and some of the bell ringers.

The Guided Tour of St George’s Churchyard reveals the life stories of many of the famous, extraordinary, and everyday people of Mossley, including: Mayors of Mossley, JPs, farmers, innkeepers, mill owners, shopkeepers, schoolmasters, musicians, poets, and those killed in coal mining accidents at Broadcarr Colliery. It is 100 pages long.

The books are sold as a set for £20.

The money will directly support St George’s Church funds.

The Vicar of Mossley, Rev David Warner said: “The books can be sourced via me, £20 for the two books and will go to church funds.

“Thanks to grants from the Duchy of Lancaster and Mossley Town Council which covered printing costs.

“I’m grateful to Rita Vaughan, Shirley Howard and Kathryn Young for their amazing work organising our archive and drawing together these wonderful books - there’s so much to find out about: our church and churchyard are woven into the history, present and future of our community.”

You can contact Rev Warner on 07506 723946 (call/text/WhatsApp) / 01457 237667.
