Denton sex club closed after complaints of ‘dungeon’ for alleged sexual activities

Local authorities launched a joint investigation into the club at Advocate’s House on Market Street following complaints from residents.

Complaints included alleged unlicensed activities and a ‘dungeon’ in the basement where alleged sexual activity was taking place.

On Wednesday 22 September, Tameside Council, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and Greater Manchester Police visited the premises in response to the complaints.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service served a prohibition notice to restrict access to the premises on the following grounds:

  • No working fire detection in place at the premises

  • No separation between commercial and residential premises

The Police also arrested the manager of the premises for breaching an order whilst on license.

Investigations into other alleged unlicensed activities and change of use of the premises is being continued by Tameside Council.

The club was home to ‘The Kink Society’, described as a ‘private social club and safe space haven for members of the LGBT+ community to congregate and meet without the dangers of victimisation, bullying or prejudice’.

Chief Inspector Lee Broadstock, of GMP’s Tameside division, said: “This premises was causing serious concern within the neighbourhood area and, thanks to the multi-agency approach taken, this premises is now closed, and enforcement action is being progressed.

“This shows that we take robust action and use our full partnership powers to keep our neighbourhoods safe.”

Tameside Council Executive Member responsible for enforcement Cllr Allison Gwynne said: “Most businesses are happy to work closely with the council and other public agencies to ensure they comply with regulations. Where businesses don’t comply, we will work with our partners to take the appropriate enforcement action.”
