Community volunteer's car stolen as she delivers food to the elderly

A caring community worker has been left shaken after a thief stole her car while she was out delivering food to the elderly.

Chris Frost, who volunteers at Mossley Community Centre, was delivering FareShare food to a house on Stockport Road, in Mossley, on Saturday at 12.05pm when her car was taken.

She uses her car to deliver the food, donated phones and Tameside Reporters to the vulnerable in Mossley to help them through the pandemic. She also stops and chats to the residents; she said sometimes she is the only person they see during the week.

Over Christmas the volunteers at the centre also spread a bit of joy by delivering afternoon teas to the vulnerable in the community.

Recently Chris has been collecting and delivering donated mobile phones and chargers to isolated residents to help them keep in touch with their friends.

The phones have been used for video chats and bingo sessions to help people stay connected. A couple of the phones were in the car when it was stolen.

Chris said: “I’m still very shocked by the whole incident. I was delivering FareShare food to a house on Stockport Road.

“I stopped on the pavement directly outside the person’s house with the engine off and door closed. I took a bag out of the boot to deliver.

“The boot was still open when someone jumped in the driver’s seat and drove off at speed - food donations flying out of the boot. The car also had a number of community connect phones in which I was about to deliver.

“Not many people got their Reporter either. They were in the boot or on the road.”

Chris’s car is a silver grey Suzuki Vitara, with registration number MC18 UVW. If anyone has any information they can contact the Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101.

A good friend of Chris’s, Lesley Bill, has set up a fund-raising page to help Chris buy another car.

She said: “Chris volunteers an enormous amount of her time for the community of Mossley. She runs various clubs for the people of Mossley and beyond.

“On Saturday she was delivering FareShare food parcels and the Tameside Reporter to an elderly lady. A car pulled up and stole it when she was less than 3ft away. Her insurance won’t pay as they claim it was ‘unattended’. Chris uses her car every day as a volunteer  and deserves better. Please help us get her another car so she can carry on her good work.”
