Age UK are appealing for shop volunteers

Age UK are appealing for new volunteers to join the team at their Ashton branch.

After reopening following the coronavirus crisis, Age UK charity shops need volunteers more than ever and are asking for local people to sign up and help out.

This appeal comes as part of Volunteer’s Week 2021, which runs from 1st-7th June and aims to celebrate people that give up their time, whilst inspiring others to get involved and help to make a difference.

Age UK shops are a vital part of the Charity’s fundraising mission and help to provide services to support older people, which have been a lifeline during lockdown and throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Whether people are looking to learn new skills, keep busy after being furloughed or losing work during the pandemic, or just meet new people, Age UK shops offer a range of roles and time slots in order to fit around busy lives. Covid secure measures are in place in every shop in order to keep staff, volunteers and customers safe.

Volunteers are told they can support the shop in a range of ways, both behind the scenes and on the shop floor. This can include serving customers, creating displays, managing stock donations and assisting with shop administration.

Jenna, Manger at the Age UK Ashton shop, said:

“We know that coronavirus has bought about many challenges for our volunteers, and this has sadly left us with a reduced number.

“The Age UK Ashton shop is reliant on the support and time given to us by volunteers and we are urgently appealing to people in the Tameside area to join our team and help by volunteering in the shop.

“We also know that many people may now be affected by new challenges from either redundancy or furlough, and we offer a range of volunteering opportunities to those who may be impacted.

“We can offer taster sessions for those looking to get a flavour of what’s involved. So, if you’re looking to develop new skills or simply make new friends, please give the Age UK Ashton shop a call on 0161 343 2649. Even small amounts of time can really make a huge difference.”

Making new friends, gaining shop experience and ultimately providing crucial care to those who need it, volunteering with Age UK could be an excellent opportunity to develop your skills and aid people along the way.
