The Mark Worthington Foundation gets the stamp of approval

The legacy of former Hyde United chief executive Mark Worthington is set to continue, after an application to form a charity in his name was given the stamp of approval.

Next Thursday (23rd) marks a year since Mark tragically died from a sudden cardiac arrest in his home, aged just 52. The news shocked Hyde United and the wider non-league circuit in general, as Mark was a much-loved figure and played a huge role in football - particularly the Tigers’ first team, women’s team and academy.

Such was his passion for the academy, Mark was an advocate of developing youth team players and worked closely with former first team manager Darren Kelly to bring through the next crop of stars.

He also financially supported the club by securing a first team kit sponsorship through his Mallorca-based company, Mostaxins Boutique Hotels Group.

And now his generosity, passion and legacy is set be honoured for years to come, as a fundraiser to set up the Mark Worthington Foundation reached £10,000 and has now been approved by the Charity Commission.

The Foundation will help young people start out in life, whether that be through sport or social enterprise.

Speaking to Reporter Sport, charity spokesman Simon Clarke said: “Mark was a larger than life character who touched many lives, and the condolences book on the Hyde United website gave a true insight into the depth of feeling over his loss, as well as describing so many wonderful stories of the people Mark helped during his time at the club.

“The charity trustees are made up of friends as well as his wife Helen , children Dan and Ella and sister Elaine. The loss of Mark was and is still hard for them all . The strength they show at being able to continue the work that he did in his life is truly remarkable . He would be so proud of them.”

Over the next 12 months, more fundraising projects will be announced that will allow the charity to continue with its work . To mark the anniversary of Mark’s passing, the Charity  want to hear from as many people  as possible with ideas on how to continue his legacy on helping young people get the best start in life. No project is too small.
