FA Cup joy for local teams

It was a night to remember for our local teams on Tuesday as Mossley, Hyde United, Stalybridge Celtic and Ashton United all progressed to the next round of the FA Cup.

Mossley kicked off their league campaign on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Ossett United and built on that with a 2-1 victory against Ramsbottom United in the FA Cup on Tuesday. Ryan Shenton put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute before Mason Fawns pulled the hosts level on the 60th minute. However, the Lilywhites re-took the lead just four minutes later through Rochdale loanee Keaton Mulvey and held out for victory. In doing so, like with all the winners on the night, Mossley bagged a place in the second qualifying round and pocketed £2,250.

On Tuesday night, Michael Clegg’s side progressed in the competition with a 2-0 win at Scarborough Athletic. Goals came courtesy of Tom Bentham in the ninth minute and Ben Hardcastle in the 88th minute. Michael Clegg's side also got their league campaign off to a great start on Saturday with a 1-0 win at Stafford Rangers.

After losing 2-0 at Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday, Hyde United bounced back with an emphatic 5-0 win at West Allotment Celtic. The game, which was moved to Newcastle Benfield's ground, saw Hyde take the lead thanks to Paddy Lane in the 15th minute, before Liam Tongue added a second in the 23rd minute. Hyde put the game to bed two minutes into the second half thanks to Kingsley James, whilst Tongue grabbed his second in the 65th minute to make it 4-0, before an own goal from Dean Walker in the 73rd minute capped off a great night.

And Stalybridge Celtic capped off a memorable night for Tameside as Simon Haworth's side beat Bishop Auckland 3-0 at Bower Fold. Mike Burke eased any nerves in the 22nd minute after putting Celtic ahead, before Harry Freedman - son of former Crystal Palace striker Dougie - doubled the advantage in the 51st minute. And the game was put to bed with 13 minute remaining when Lewis Salmon bagged his first for the club.
