Ex-Manchester City goalkeeper Alex Williams is coming to Glossop

Former Manchester City goalkeeper Alex Williams is not just a football legend; he's a symbol of resilience, community, and inspiration.

On Friday 23 February, Dark Peak Books and Gifts will host an evening with Williams at Glossop North End, offering a glimpse into his extraordinary life journey chronicled in his autobiography, "You Saw Me Standing Alone."

For many, Williams needs no introduction. He's not only been a stalwart between the goalposts but also a beacon of hope for countless individuals. Growing up, he found solace and purpose in football, eventually making his mark at Manchester City, where he became an idol for young fans, including two familiar faces – Noel and Liam Gallagher, who were once star-struck teenagers cheering for their hero at Maine Road.

But Williams' journey wasn't just about glory on the pitch; it was also about confronting adversity off it. As the first modern-day black goalkeeper in England, he faced appalling racism. Yet, he didn't let prejudice deter him. Instead, he channelled his experiences into paving the way for others, particularly through community initiatives aimed at empowering disadvantaged youth.

Williams' resilience and dedication led him to the pinnacle of his career, only to be halted by an injury that prematurely ended his time on the field. However, this setback didn't define him; it propelled him towards a new chapter – one of storytelling and inspiration.

His autobiography, "You Saw Me Standing Alone," offers readers a glimpse into his rollercoaster journey – from the highs of professional football to the lows of injury and beyond. But perhaps most importantly, it sheds light on the power of perseverance, community, and the human spirit.

The event at Glossop North End promises an evening filled with laughter, entertainment, and insight as Williams shares anecdotes from his remarkable life. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear firsthand the stories that have shaped him into the iconic figure he is today, and purchase signed copies of the book.

Mel O'Brien, owner of Dark Peak Books and Gifts, expresses her excitement about the event, highlighting Williams' captivating autobiography and the opportunity to bring his story to Glossop. "I love football as much as I love books," she says, "so I'm really excited to be working with Glossop North End AFC and City in the Community to bring Manchester City legend Alex Williams to Glossop. I really enjoyed reading his fascinating autobiography, and I'm looking forward to hearing more about his incredible life when he comes to town."

Tickets are just £5, and redeemable against a copy of the book on the night. They can be purchased from Dark Peak Books and Gifts, on High Street West in Glossop, or online via Ticketsource.co.uk by searching ‘Alex Williams Glossop’.
