Black History Month to be celebrated with an Afro and Caribbean food event in Oldham

Come and try delicious cuisine in Oldham town centre this Saturday (30 October), as an exciting range of Afro and Caribbean foods will be on display as part of Oldham's celebration of Black History Month.

Have you ever tried cassava, yam, shima or goat curry? If you never have, it’s a great reason to come and try something new whilst celebrating the diversity of the borough.

Event organiser Mahongo Shibemba, from the All Nations Church, said: “It’s brilliant to be able to put this event on for people to come and enjoy. We have a wide range of food available both to try and to take home and cook for yourself, there’s something for everyone.

“But, this event is about more than just food - it’s about exploring and celebrating different cultures, discussing food poverty and learning from each other. This is particularly important as we come off the back of the COVID-19 pandemic which hit black and other communities particularly hard.

“So, come along and enjoy yourself, have a chat, and If you’ve never tried Afro and Caribbean food before then why not give it a try?”

Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “It’s been a fantastic Black History Month. We’ve seen many inspiring events throughout October and what better way to end it than with a celebration of food and flavours for people to come and enjoy.

“Events like this showcase that our diversity is our strength, and I’m proud to be leading a council that recognises that and puts equality at the heart of our agenda.”

The event is free to attend and will be running from 11:00am – 2:30pm on Saturday 30 October in Oldham town centre outside of Primark.
