High Peak's Conservative MP Robert Largan has given his backing to new prime minister Rishi Sunak but the local branch of the Labour Party feels there should now be a general election. 

Mr Sunak was formally appointed as the Conservative Party leader and PM on Tuesday by King Charles, becoming the first British Asian to take the top job at No 10 Downing Street. 

It spelled the end of Liz Truss's turbulent premiership, which lasted just 49 days. 

After Mr Sunak had delivered his first speech as prime minister, MP Largan tweeted: "Rishi is one of the most impressive people I have ever met. Thoughtful, hard-working and with real integrity. He has just set out the challenge ahead, his commitment to rebuild trust, reunite the country and govern with compassion. We all need him to succeed." 

But opposition parties have been demanding for an immediate general election, arguing that Mr Sunak has no mandate from the public. 

Fiona Sloman, Chair of High Peak Constituency Labour Party, said: "This government has a history of not listening to the people so an unelected Prime Minister should come as no surprise. Clearly there should now be a general election but no doubt that call will also fall on deaf ears."
