Protestors criticised for spray painting graffiti on former bank

The former Barclays bank in Glossop where the graffiti was sprayed.

Protestors against the use of fossil fuels are being criticised for spray painting graffiti in the Glossop Conservation Area.

The slogan was daubed on the side of the former Barclays bank in the town centre in red paint recently.

It has now been cleaned off the windows of the building.

Local people have expressed their anger on social media, with one person saying it is "ridiculous to paint a message about saving the earth with an aerosol paint, which is just surely harming the environment."

Another comment said: "A few idiots on here who think vandalising your own town is an appropriate way to cock-a-snook at big business. Cutting off your nose to spite your face."

The High Street East site - which was sold at an auction earlier this month - has been empty since last August, when Barclays also closed branches in Buxton and Marple.

Councillor Anthony Mckeown, Leader of High Peak Borough Council, said: "Graffiti is a form of anti-social behaviour committed by a small minority that can cause fear and intimidation and have a negative impact on the wider public. We would urge people to behave responsibly and not to do this.

“You can report any issues of graffiti to the Council and we will try to remove it as soon as possible. If the graffiti is on private property we will contact the owners to arrange removal.”
