MP in campaign call to get train timetables back on track

Local MP Robert Largan has this week launched a campaign calling on rail operator Northern to reinstate a full train timetable in the High Peak as soon as possible.

Since 4 January, Northern has been running a reduced schedule on the Glossop-Hadfield/Manchester and Buxton-Manchester lines, as a result of higher than usual levels of train crew absence which the train operator blames on Covid-19 and general sickness.

Trains from Glossop and Hadfield to Manchester Piccadilly are currently operating with reduced frequencies, with less than the usual half-hourly service.

A number of services are also currently suspended from Buxton to Manchester Piccadilly including the peak time 7.59am service, which was vital for commuters and students alike.

The reduced levels of service have caused havoc for commuters, many of whom have contacted the MP to raise their concerns about overcrowded trains, increased traffic on local roads and college students missing their lessons.

With the recent removal of all remaining Covid-19 restrictions and disruptive roadworks planned in both Buxton and Glossop from April, the MP has now launched a petition - which you can sign by clicking here - to urge Northern to reinstate a full timetable as soon as possible.

Mr Largan said: "Before I was elected, I commuted from Glossop to Manchester every day by train. I have experienced first-hand just how poor our rail service is.

"Although we are now seeing hard-won improvements with new rolling stock and the electrification of the Hope Valley line, Northern's latest timetable reductions are inflicting misery on commuters across the High Peak.

"Many constituents have written to me in recent weeks to express their dismay at over-crowded, unreliable trains with standing room only.

"Even worse, many are now choosing to travel to work and college by car, adding to traffic levels on our roads just before major roadworks are due to begin on Mottram Moor.

"Now that Covid-19 restrictions have been removed, I am calling on Northern to get our trains back on track by reinstating a full timetable on the Glossop/Hadfield-Manchester and Buxton-Manchester lines. High Peak's commuters deserve better than this."
