Lib Dem candidate to visit town centre

The Liberal Democrats prospective parliamentary candidate for the High Peak will be in Glossop this weekend, with the aim of meeting voters.

Described as the ‘new face of Liberal Democrats in the High Peak', Guy Kiddey was nominated at a packed hustings in Chapel-en-le-Frith last week.

A multi-linguist with British, Spanish and Irish roots, Mr Kiddey has recently moved back to Britain after an international career.

He spent much of his childhood hiking and fishing in the High Peak area and was in Buxton last weekend ‘meeting voters’.

Mr Kiddey, 31, said: “So many people are flocking to the Liberal Democrats after a lifetime of voting for other parties.

“They know that now is not the time for blind loyalty. Now is the time for national unity and leadership. Only the Liberal Democrats can offer this.”

Claiming that the coming General Election race in High Peak will be between Labour and the Lib Dems, Mr Kiddey said: “The indications are clear. In High Peak, around a quarter of people who voted Labour in 2017, and nearly half of people who voted Tory in 2017, will vote Liberal Democrat in 2019.”

Mr Kiddey, who will be in Norfolk Square from 11am to 3pm on Saturday, added:  “Quite a few Brexiteers came over to chat too (in Buxton).

“I welcome this sort of engagement. I’ll listen to anyone and respond with my point of view. If we end up agreeing, great. If we agree to disagree, that’s fine.”

Talking about the issue of democracy and about how some people think the Liberal Democrats ‘seem to be disregarding’ the 2016 Referendum result, Mr Kiddey went on: “The last three years have brought chaos to this country. We want this to end.

“We don’t think leaving the EU is good for the UK in any way, shape or form. Democracy is fighting for what you believe in. That was the case during the two world wars, and it’s still the case today.”

A keen musician and singer, Mr Kiddey also loves to cycle. Over the summer, he rode to Finland from Poland.
