High Peak continues to support Ukrainians in need

A fantastic fundraising effort by students at Glossopdale School has raised vital cash for charity.

The funds were raised through a variety of events including bake sales held by Year 7 and 8, ‘walk a mile in their shoes’ trainer day, the student council big raffle and an art competition.

In total £1,075.80 has been raised which is being donated to the Ukraine Appeal via The Hummingbird Project and Comic Relief.

Jo Gregory from the Hummingbird Project told the students: “Thank you all so very much - you are a credit to your school!”

She said the £500 donation she had received will be used by their partner groups in Ukraine who are working to evacuate people and get aid into besieged areas.

It will also help in border countries where humanitarian aid is being distributed to those fleeing the crisis, with 100 per cent of the donations they collect going directly to where it is needed.

More than £5,000 has been raised by the generous people of Glossopdale to support the efforts of partners groups in Ukraine.

Matilda's cakes help raise funds

Dinting CE Primary School has been raising money for Ukraine and one pupil in particular who loves baking came up with the idea to set up her own little cafe to help.

Eight-year-old Matilda Hutchinson spent last Saturday baking lots of cakes and set up a table adorned by yellow and blue balloons (the colours of the Ukraine flag) outside her Werneth Road home in Simmondley on Sunday between 10am and 1pm to give away her goodies in exchange for donations to the appeal.

Matilda's proud mum Hayley said: "Overwhelmed with the kindness from the people of Simmondley! Thank you so much, she is so excited to take it in to school and tell everyone how much she has raised! A massive £331.83."

Well done, Matilda!

Volunteer translators needed

High Peak charity Zink is looking for volunteer translators as they put measures in place to ensure their services will be available to any Ukrainian refugees who come to the area.

The charity is looking for people who are either a Ukrainian or Russian speakers who would be willing to volunteer their time to translate at Zink so they can help refugees settle in the area.

It is not yet clear how many, if any, Ukrainian refugees will end up in the High Peak, but the charity wants to be prepared. Email paul@zink.org.uk if you can help out.
