Glossop's Victorian and Heritage Weekend gets grant boost

Glossop's Victorian and Heritage Weekend has been awarded a grant of £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund.

The money will be used to help pay for the event, which will take place on 27, 28 and 29 May.

Glossop Round Table, in conjunction with a committee made up of local residents and Glossop Heritage Trust, are organising the event, which is taking place for the first time since 2009.

Ed Siddall, a Hadfield South borough councillor who is also part of the Round Table, told us: "We applied for the Big Lottery grant but got knocked back, so we re-applied with more information about how the event is so popular with local people and the second time the money was approved. We will use it to help fund the event. The aim is to make it sustainable so it can take place every year."

High Peak Borough Council has also contributed £1,000. Other local councillors have put money in the pot and there is also sponsorship of the event from Davis Blank Furniss, Ryder and Dutton and other local businesses.

Over the three days, there will be food stalls and various entertainment including brass bands, 50s and 60s music plus a parade down Glossop High Street starting from Glossop North End.

Ed added: "The Sunday will be all about the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. To celebrate our Monarch we’re encouraging people to dress in 50s and 60s clothing.

"Each day is going to be different. Friday we will focus on the beer festival, featuring High Peak ales, Saturday is for families with fairground rides, craft and market stalls. Free shire horse drawn rides and steam traction engines. We’re hoping that everybody will enjoy being out and about together after the Covid pandemic. We aim to celebrate Glossop’s history.”

It’s hoped that the three-day event will raise enough money to be put towards next year’s Victorian and Heritage Weekend.
