Glossop Creates: The story so far one year on

Glossop Creates was officially launched in December 2020, during one of the most challenging times for small independent businesses, venues and creatives.

The campaign was introduced to empower Glossop’s creative community to come together, create ideas and lead the change it wanted to see.

Starting with a website - glossopcreates.com - which acted as a hub and a directory for local creatives and indie businesses, they began to build up a community that both supported and inspired people to collaborate and celebrate the wonderful talent we have in the town.

Love Glossop Support Local

In April 2021, Glossop Creates teamed up with custom screen printing studio Dark Peak Press to launch a campaign called Love Glossop Support Local.

The campaign aimed to raise awareness of the incredible variety of local shops and other businesses in our beautiful town and surrounding villages, including food and drink outlets, hospitality venues, charities and services that support the local community.

To encourage shoppers and businesses to get behind the initiative, the Love Glossop, Support Local logo – designed by Dark Peak Press – was immortalised onto reusable tote bags, badges and window stickers for businesses to give away and people in the town to use. You can still pick them up from the KIN.DER shop to support the campaign.

The Pairings Projects

The PAIRINGS residency programme, curated by Claire Tymon (pictured below), invited three artists to research and develop ideas related to issues that are important and interesting to the wider community.

The artists were encouraged to use their creative skills and practice, while creating high quality, locally relevant work and research that opens doors to Glossop’s cultural heritage and provides alternative perceptions of Glossop by focusing on its assets from interesting angles.

This year, the three topics were: The Town Hall, Glossop’s rich Textile Heritage and Nature. All residencies were taken up by talented local creatives and you can read about the individual projects on GlossopCreates.com

The launch of KIN.DER

In November, the Glossop Creates team, alongside Dark Peak Press, Lauren Riley Design and Richard Tymon Photography, took over a space on the ground floor at Glossop Gasworks on Arundel Street and transformed it into a creative, co-operative hub for the arts in Glossop.

KIN.DER is situated in the old Wain’s Art Supplies site and is home to a shop showcasing a wide range of items made and designed by local creatives, a print studio and meeting space.

Glossop Creates also launched a zine by the same name to coincide with KIN.DER opening. They hope to have the next issue out early in the new year, so do drop in to KIN.DER and see them with your ideas and feel free to submit articles for the zine on any subjects that are creative or interesting.

The team behind KIN.DER plans to use the space to hold workshops, talks, presentations, performances, markets, classes, events and more in 2022.
