Generous High Peak folk continue to support Ukraine people

Local efforts to help people in Ukraine are ongoing, with people across the High Peak continuing to generously support those fleeing the war-hit nation.

In Glossopdale, the Hummingbird Project's appeal has raised around £5,500 in cash donations so far.

The group hosted a virtual car boot sale last weekend where people could upload items, sell them and then donate the proceeds to the appeal, which was a great success.

Jo Gregory, who has been co-ordinating the appeal, said: "We've had some great businesses donating profits and proceeds as well as individual donations and approximately £400 just from the online car boot alone.

"When I had the idea for an online car boot, I wasn't sure if it would work or not, but we had some amazing donations from people gifting their items and donating all of the proceeds to our Ukrainian refugee appeal.

"We've just funded a container of medical aid from Ireland going to a field hospital in Ukraine. We funded transport to get 38 orphans out of crisis areas with Ukraine last week, and we've bought over £1,000 worth of medical aid which is now in Ukraine with our ground teams."

Among those supporting the Hummingbird Project appeal has been comedian Maff Brown, who donated £650 from his most recent comedy night in London.

Glossop youngsters George and Isy Bromley, who raised £266.40 after making and selling Ukraine keyrings at the Friends of Victoria Hall's Spring Fair last weekend.

Meanwhile, Karen Kimber from Glossop-based business Brie For Tea raised £200 by donating proceeds from sales of cheese boards. The money was immediately sent to fund two buses to get orphans out of crisis areas within Ukraine.

The Hummingbirds - which started in 2018 to support people in local and refugee communities affected by poverty, homelessness and austerity - also have other plans in the pipeline to keep the appeal going and are encouraging local businesses to get involved.

People can donate through PayPal with the email address hummingbirdhubs@gmail.com or via bank transfer - the details are HSBC, sort code 400833 and account number 71611631.

Last Sunday (13 March), Kevin Haywood from local haulage firm Haywood Transport Services and his co-pilot Chris took a 45ft trailer full of aid to Poland on behalf of the Stockport Ukrainian Club.

The lorry contained over 500 boxes of donations and aid which has been generously donated by local communities.
