Efforts to minimise disruption during major roadworks in High Peak

Efforts are being made to try to minimise disruption when works begin on two major routes in the High Peak.

It had been feared there would be traffic chaos if traffic lights were in operation for the new roundabout on the A6 at Fairfield Common at the same time as the A5004 Long Hill is closed for repair work.

However, it appears following talks between various parties including Derbyshire County Council and High Peak Borough Council that measures are being taken to try and avoid a clash.

Long Hill is to close on 25 April until September to allow for work to repair the collapsed section of road.

Work on the A6 will start next week on the land to the side of the road with the major road works taking place from September when it is hoped Long Hill will have reopened.

MP Robert Largan said: “I’m pleased that some common sense has been applied and I’m very grateful to the officers at both High Peak Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council in agreeing to meet with me and working together to reduce the impact of these works.

“I’ll be pushing to get the works done as quickly as possible and to try and minimise disruption for residents and businesses.”

Whaley Bridge County Councillor Ruth George said if there are complication with the work on Long Hill and it can’t be completed the two works could still clash but the council have stated they will try to keep that time as short a possible if it does occur.

Cllr George said she had clarified that Long Hill will be closed with concrete barriers just after Taxal lay-by coming from Whaley and just after the large lay-by above Fernilee Reservoir coming from Buxton.

She stated that Elnor Lane will be open in both directions but will only be used for accessing Fernilee. “It’s not going to be an easy time, but I’ll be working with residents and local businesses to encourage Derbyshire County Council to do as much as they can to reduce the problems.”
