A whole chapter of learning for Whitfield St James' pupils

Whitfield St James' CE (VC) Primary School turned World Book Day celebrations into a fun-filled and exciting week for its pupils with reading at the heart of it.

During the week, children from Nursery hid books around Glossop for others to find, enjoy and share.

All children at the Chadwick Street school took part in a 'Drop Everything and Read' event, when a bell was rung throughout the day and everybody - including staff - had to stop what they were doing and read a book.

Throughout the week, all classes started a new topic book novel and there was whole class guided reading books - with much enthusiastic discussion about the books taking place.

As part of World Book Day on Thursday (3 March), all children and staff members dressed as their favourite character from a book.

There was also discussions about their favourite books and authors, live virtual lessons with famous authors and illustrators, quizzes, reading sessions, and a 'book swap' where the children brought into school a pre-loved book and swapped it with one brought in by a fellow pupil.

One class also went to nearby shop Bay Tree Books on High Street West in Glossop and bought a £1 book with their World Book Day token.

Leo Ford, deputy head teacher, said: "The whole week supports the school's love and enjoyment for reading. Every class uses books to enrich the curriculum.
