When 11-year-old Merlin decided to partake in the “Trig Bagging” challenge to raise money in memory of his late mother, he had no idea just how much he would achieve.

The challenge includes getting to all 88 triangulation pillars within the Peak District. 

He is doing the challenge in memory of his late mum who passed away when he was just 10 weeks old and is also commemorating the Mummy’s Star charity. 

The charity was created in the wake of the family’s loss of Mair, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer whilst pregnant with him.  

Merlin began the challenge aged 10  last March and has almost completed all 88 trigangulations points. On his journey, he has raised over £1500 to which his dad Pete Wallroth (who is the founder of the Mummy's Star charity) said: “We’re all super proud of what he’s achieved and he’s raised over £1,500 in the process for the charity. His Mum Mair would have been really very proud of him and it feels really fitting that the challenge ends on Mothers Day weekend.”

Throughout the challenge, Merlin has been all over the Peak District including Wibben Hill in Tissington, Axe Edge in Buxton and the Shining Tor hill. 

Pete added: “As he’s approached the end of it, he’s certainly been tested by the worst of the wind and rain on some of the highest summits especially on Kinder but he’s tucked his head down and ploughed through. His boots have one more walk in them before going in the bin.” 

As Merlin has completed 87/88 trig points, his last challenge will be on Saturday 9th March which is Mother’s Day weekend. The walk will begin at the Distant Hills Brewery at 1:30 to walk up to the Cock Hill trigpoint. Anyone is welcome to join the final walk and then meeting in the brewery afterwards to celebrate.
