Woman's body found in Ashton Canal

The body of a 48-year-old woman has been found in Ashton Canal today (Wednesday).

The woman, who hasn't yet been named, was recovered from a stretch of water between the Asda superstore near the Etihad Stadium and the Velodrome, also known as the National Cycling Centre, at around 9.30am. 

Greater Manchester Police say her family have been informed and the death is not being treated as suspicious. 

GMP said in a statement: "At around 9.40am today, Wednesday 4 March 2020, police were called to reports of concern for the welfare of a woman. 

"Emergency services arrived at Ashton Canal and sadly found the body of a 48-year-old woman.

"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding her death and enquiries are ongoing. 

"A file has been passed to the coroner."
