Celtic end their season on a high

Stalybridge Celtic ended their season on a high over the weekend with a 2-1 win at home to Kidsgrove Athletic.

The home side had the first chance of the afternoon after just five minutes, with Darius Osei meeting a cross from Ethen Vaughan, but the forward’s near post header flew just over the crossbar.

Celtic then came close to scoring just before the half-hour mark when Cole Lonsdale’s free-kick from outside the area was saved by Harrison in the Kidsgrove goal.

The hosts flew out of the blocks in the second half, taking the lead early on after debutant Prince Anuniru, who came into the starting 11 after impressing for the Under 21’s, put the ball on a plate for Darius Osei, who fired the ball across goal from inside the penalty area to put his side ahead.

However, this lead was short-lived as visitors Kidsgrove were awarded a penalty just past the hour mark, with Lewis Bergin sending Hewitson the wrong way and levelling up the scoring from the spot.

Celtic then regained the lead just minutes later when Joe Edwards’ side-footed volley from the edge of the area found the bottom left corner- a goal worthy of winning any match.

The victory means Celtic finish their season firmly in mid table, sitting in 12th place after 38 games and ten points outside the play-off places.

It was also a fantastic week for Stalybridge Celtic’s Under 21’s side, who became League Cup winners on Sunday after defeating Runcorn Sports in the final, with George Omokua scoring the deciding goal two minutes from time.

The 21’s now have just one game remaining in their league campaign, they take on 1874 Northwich tonight (May 2) at Bower Fold.
