Online Safety Bill

After years of debate, the government's controversial Online Safety Bill, which aims to make the internet safer for children, has become law.

It seeks to force tech firms to take more responsibility for the content on their platforms.

Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan said it "ensures the online safety of British society not only now, but for decades to come."

But critics have raised concerns about the implications for privacy.

WhatsApp is among the messaging services to threaten to withdraw from the UK over the act.

PlayStation 5 Supply Chain Fixed

Supply chain problems that plagued the PlayStation 5 for three years have now been resolved, its maker Sony has said.

The global chip shortage which began in 2020 impacted industries from car manufacturing to credit cards.

Customers were frustrated at month-long waits for the PS5, with some queueing outside shops overnight, and others paying resellers sky-high prices.

The shortages steadily resolved through 2023, and Sony said its supply chain is now completely fixed worldwide.

That means the console is now not only readily available - but a surplus may lead to retailers competing for the sale.

Oldham Council's IT Security Upgrades

A council is to spend £682,000 on computer upgrades after bosses said they were fighting off 10,000 cyber attacks a day.

Members of Oldham Council's cabinet said they would use the money to buy a "modern data protection service".

Their current system has no ability to protect backup data against "malicious damage" or protect services held in the Cloud, officers said.

Councillor Elaine Taylor said it would be "money well spent".

🛡️ Security Corner 🛡️

Data from Action Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting service, shows that from August 2022 – July 2023, there were 18,011 reports of social media and email hacking.

Within these reports, 4,092 victims reported being extorted for money, or having their accounts used to perpetrate fraud against the wider public. In one example, Action Fraud has received over a dozen reports in the last two months relating to hacked social media accounts being utilised to promote fake Taylor Swift tickets.
