A Council Phone Line Difficult To Use

A man has criticised Derby City Council's new automated phone lines for being too difficult for older people to use.

Cliff Lowe, 71, said he tried to use the voice recognition system to request a blue badge parking permit but it did not understand his instructions.

The council said callers also had the option to speak to a human.

But Mr Lowe said the system would not transfer him - and human operators did not answer when he called direct.

Mr Lowe, from Allestree, has been given less than two years to live after contracting an aggressive form of blood cancer and cannot carry anything or walk more than a few hundred metres after several surgical proceedures.

Fake Wilko Website

Shoppers have lost hundreds of pounds after being conned by a website pretending to be that of troubled retailer Wilko.

South Yorkshire Police said they had received 19 reports of people losing cash to a fake site.

The High Street chain collapsed into administration in August.

PC Angela Senior said: "Unfortunately, cyber scammers are often very good at making fake shopping websites look realistic."

PC Senior said the reports had been received in August and September with each victim losing up to £200 as a result.

"It's really important that people remain vigilant to the fact that these fake websites are out there and make the necessary checks before making any purchases," she added.

Force Data Breach A "One-Off"

A police and crime commissioner (PCC) has said a force data breach was a "one-off".

The names and the salaries of every Cumbria Police officer and staff member were accidentally published online in March.

PCC Peter McCall told Westmorland and Furness Council's police, fire and crime panel that lessons had been learned from the incident.

He said there had been "no risk to individual personnel".

In August, when the breach became publicly known, the force blamed "human error" which led to the information being wrongly uploaded to its website.

🛡️ Security Corner 🛡️

A backup is a copy of your important data that's stored in a separate safe location, usually on the internet (known as cloud storage), or on removable media (such as USB stick, SD card, or external hard drive).

Once you've made a backup, if you lose access to your original data, you can restore a copy of it from the backup.

As a rule of thumb, you should back up anything that you value. That is, anything that would inconvenience you - for whatever reason - if you could no longer access it.
