A church secretary from Dukinfield has raised £1000 for Willow Wood Hospice by completing a cycling challenge at her home.
Sandra Austin, 76, has been secretary at St. Mark’s for the past five years, having been a member of the congregation all her life. She was due to undergo a knee replacement earlier this year but that was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Sandra explained: “I can’t walk because of my knee so I’ve been using an exercise bike to keep the muscles working. As I was doing it every day at home, I thought why not set a target and ask people to sponsor me?”
So, when the second period of lockdown was announced, Sandra set a target of cycling 10km every day for three weeks, initially thinking she would raise a few hundred pounds.
But, after completing the challenge last week, Sandra has raised £1000 for Willow Wood, where she has been a volunteer for 18 years.
You can still donate online at www.willowwood.info/support-us or by dropping a donation through the vicarage letter box at St Mark’s and marking it for Willow Wood.
