Why a young volunteer from Hollingworth has received an award

Twelve-year-old Mia Booth is celebrating after scooping a national Young Volunteer of the Year award for her work with The Friends of Etherow Lodge Park.

Mia lives with her family in Hollingworth and attended Hollingworth Primary before going to Longdendale High School.

The Friends group’s Jan Malpas said: “Mia has been helping in the park for several years now, alongside her grandfather, Chris Oldham.

“The Friends’ Group has really appreciated their contributions to the work in the park and their increasingly imaginative activities for young people at our events. Mia is a joy to work with and truly deserving of the award.”

Despite everything this has been another good year for the park, which has once again been awarded a Green Flag in recognition of the high standards and good management which are always maintained in the park.

“These national awards are a great honour for they provide a benchmark both in the UK and abroad, recognising the hard work and dedication of the Friends’ Group’s loyal volunteers,” added Jan.
