'What a fabulous day' - Fun in the sun in Gee Cross for charity

Former professional boxer Ricky Hatton, who lives in Hyde, was on the receiving end of sponges.

Local celebrities got wet in aid of charity as the sun came out for a fun-filled day in the Gee Cross area of Hyde.

The six-hour bonanza took place on Sunday (5 September) at The Grapes Hotel on Stockport Road.

There was a variety of activity stalls, live music, bowling, a bouncy castle, Morris dancing and so much more.

Former professional boxer Ricky Hatton, Tom Cassell (a.k.a Syndicate) and Hyde Werneth councillor Phil Chadwick were among those who sportingly took to the stocks and had wet sponges thrown at their faces.

The fun day was organised by On The Move Property Boutique, an estate agency based in the village, in conjunction with The Grapes and GX Neighbourhood Watch to raise money for Ashton-based Willow Wood Hospice.

Over £3,500 was raised, which will help the hospice continue their work in providing care to those with life-limiting illnesses across Tameside and Glossop.

Willow Wood Hospice said in a statement: "We'd like to say a massive thank you to everyone that came down to the Gee Cross Charity Fun Day last Sunday! The organisers have managed to raise over £3,500 for Willow Wood, a truly fantastic effort by all.

"Thanks to all involved for your amazing support, we truly appreciate it."

On The Move said on its Facebook page: "What a fabulous day! Thank you to everyone that came to the first Gee Cross Charity Fun Day, we hope you all had a great time!"

Cllr Chadwick commented: "The sun was out in Gee Cross and what a fantastic Charity Fun Day it was too.

"Credit goes to Annabelle and the team at On The Move Property Boutique for organising, to Marcello and his staff for hosting the event at The Grapes and to the two Neighbourhood watch groups, GX Brabyns and Werneth Low, for helping out today.

"A fantastic amount of money has been raised for Willow Wood Hospice and there was a lot of fun, laughter, singing and dancing not to mention a lot of sponge throwing and buckets of water.

"Thanks to Ricky Hatton, Tom Cassell (Syndicate) and Marcello for taking part in raising money and getting very wet. I was absolutely drenched, but all in aid of a good cause. Well done Gee Cross, your support was fantastic."
