Weekend Review: Greater Manchester Cricket League

With the season reaching the half way point this coming Saturday it is going to take a strong run from another team and a loss of form from Denton St Lawrence to stop them gaining a first ever Premier Division title.

They maintained their 100% record from completed games in making short order of Stand on Saturday.  The strugglers, with only two wins to their name so far, batted first and Scott Kirwin picked up a couple of early wickets.  Matt Sonczak then stepped up to the plate and with 5-30 ensured that DSL only required 87 for the win.  The loss of Adam Hawley to the first ball of the innings, quickly followed by Ben Tighe may have set nerves jangling but these were quickly smoothed by Kirwin, (39) and pro Neil Hornbuckle, (40*) as they got home inside 17 overs for a 7 wicket win.  It made for a good weekend for DSL who qualified for the T20 quarter finals with a win at Woodhouses on Friday evening.  They now face a trip to Moorside this Friday with a place in finals day at stake.

Division 1A

After losing their first two games of the season, Denton West made it 5 wins in a row from completed games when they had an impressive victory at leaders Glodwick.  The home team totalled 187, (with the last 2 wickets adding 57), as Hamish Dunlop, (4-44), led the way for Wests.  The reply was emphatic and was capped by an unbeaten 4thwicket partnership of 99 between Aaqib Uppal, (53*), and John Barnett, (45*), as they got home by 7 wickets inside 36 overs.  The win leaves them in 2ndplace just a point behind Glodwick.  Glossop have also been climbing the table and stand 3rdafter a comprehensive win over a Denton team which has really slipped in the last few weeks.  In the game at Egerton Street, Denton batted first and had little answer to Alex Coates, (6-32), as the home team struggled to get to 104.  Coates had a good day all round, as coming in at 46-4 he guided Glossop to victory together with Alex Bowne.  Flowery Field welcomed Heywood to Throstle Bank Street and had a long afternoon as the visitors ran up 251-9, despite the efforts of Mike Finan, (7-48).  Finan then opened the batting and was in reality the only real resistance encountered by Heywood.  He ended up with 54 as Flowery fell 106 short of the Heywood total.

Division 1B

By close of play on Saturday the three local teams, Droylsden, Dukinfield and Stayley, approached the half-way stage with 2 wins each, and a placing in the lower half of the table.  Stayley were the only victors at the weekend.  In an encounter with fellow strugglers Westleigh they set the visitors to Oxford Street 194 for the win.  A half century from James Park-Johnson was the foundation for what was a challenging total.  Westleigh fell to 37-4 in reply and never really recovered finishing 39 short thanks to a fine return of 5-43 from Faisal Hussain on his first appearance for Stayley. Droylsden’s home game against Edgworth was over fairly quickly as they managed only 68 and saw the visitors take only 15 overs to gain the win.  Dukinfield were set 239 to win against visitors Greenmount after Jake Fenton featured with the ball taking 4-65. Fenton lead with bat after the interval, and at 122=2 with 22 overs left Dukinfield would have been hopeful, but after Fenton’s departure for 77 the inning subsided to a defeat by 59 runs.

Division 2A

Micklehurst’s great run came to an end at Roe Green 2ndXI and as a result fell to 4thin the table.  The home team reached 191ao, (Lewis Daniel 4-48) but this proved too many for Micklehurst, after a decent start which reached 60-1 with 35 overs left. The next 20 overs saw 9 wickets fall for the addition of only a further 41.  The Richmond Hill team will be looking to bounce back when they return to home soil this weekend when struggling Glossop 2ndXI are the visitors.

Division 2B

There was a welcome win for Ashton in the basement battle with Tottington.  The Rayner Lane team had a great start reaching 87 without loss, (Matt Job 41).  Ashton’s problem has been the middle order this season and once again it proved a weakness as all 10 wickets then fell for the addition of only another 60.  The Ashton attack restricted Tottington well and despite some late order resistance the wickets were shared around a 5 man attack as they came out on top by 12 runs.  Ashton now face a trip to old CLL and PCL foes Oldham this weekend.

In the Ashton derby at Rosehill Road it was Ashton 2ndXI who came out on top and in doing so leapfrogged hosts Ashton Ladysmith.  Only Antony Rogers, (35), provided much resistance to an Ashton attack which featured Mark Adrian.  After his 8 wicket display last week he finished with 4-40, leaving him with 23 for the season at an average of 8.  In reply Ashton were made to fight, losing 6 wickets and taking 28 overs to reach the target.
