Volunteer project blooms in Dukinfield

Hard-working and green-thumbed volunteers have joined forces to work on a new community project in Dukinfield.

Greenscape, which specialises in providing meaningful work opportunities for local people who face challenges which can place them furthest away from the job market, have got to work on a new community plot in Dukinfield.

The site, based near Morrisons, is set to be a therapeutic horticulture project to boost the well-being of residents.

Last week, a call went out for volunteers to help clear the site and a hardy bunch of green-fingered helpers - Steve, Karen and Kath - turned up to clear it in readiness for planting.

Jojo Parry, from Greenscape, said: “We are part of Leap Children, a families and community charity based in Ashton.

“One of our services is to provide a day care service for adults with a mild to moderate learning disability, or long-term mental health problem. This is at our Bloom allotments on Grange Road South in Hyde.

“We are looking for funding to develop the Dukinfield allotment - this will be a community project, to support many different groups in the local community.

“This may be mental health, loneliness, or another group that would benefit from being a natural outdoor space. It has been proven that being outdoors is a benefit for both mental and physical health.

“We are looking for volunteers to help get this project up and running. Physical help with preparing the site, donations, materials or help to support the people that come to the projects.”
