Three people taken to hospital after serious crash in Ashton

Three people have been taken to hospital - including one with life-threatening injuries - following a serious crash on a main road in Ashton-under-Lyne.

A man and a woman who were trapped were cut free from separate vehicles by firefighters. 

One person was taken to Tameside Hospital with a wrist injury. 

Stamford Street East in Ashton was closed in both directions between Dorset Street and Montague Road from just before 11am this morning (Wednesday) until just after 1pm after a collision involving three vehicles. 

Emergency services responded and an air ambulance helicopter has been witnessed landing in the Stamford Park area. 

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 10:52 today to reports on a multiple vehicle RTC on Stamford Square, Ashton-under-Lyne.

"We sent a number of resources to scene including two RRVs, four land ambulances, an air ambulance, advanced paramedic and bronze officer.

"We took three patients to hospital. Two patients went to Tameside General Hospital, one of which had a wrist injury. We took one patient with major trauma injuries to Manchester Royal."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 10.57am today to Stamford Square, Ashton-Under-Lyne to reports of a road traffic collision.

“One fire engine from Hyde, one fire engine from Stalybridge and the Techincal Response Unit from Ashton-Under-Lyne are in attendance.

“The road traffic collision involves three vehicles. Firefighters extricated a woman from one of the vehicles and a man from another. Firefighters will be leaving the scene shortly.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police added: "At around 10.50am on Wednesday 1 July 2020, police were called to reports of a collision on Granville Street, Ashton-Under-Lyne.

"Officers attended and established three cars had collided near the junction with Stamford Street.

"No arrests have been made." 

There were reports of long queues of traffic near Tameside College on Beaufort Road, with the road closed for more than two hours.
